Small Bathroom Design Ideas

Like most homeowners you probably wish you had a larger more luxurious bathroom in your home. If adding any more square footage is out of the question there are some design ideas that can make your small bathroom at least look and feel bigger and seem less cramped.

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

Bathroom remodeling ideas need not be limited to big, luxurious bathrooms that have more generous space and therefore are more able to move around their bathroom fixtures and remodeling plumbing and electrical outlets. Most homes will have small bathrooms and a small bathroom can have a cozy and intimate feel. However too often bathrooms are not looked at as a space where one can spend quality time. As a result many bathrooms are usually just designed to be comfortable and efficient enough.

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

Regardless of the style you choose to decorate your small bath, it nevertheless will remain a small bath. You can by using by using the right colors and lighting design, create a posh and cozy bathroom retreat.

Theories concerning space enlargement will apply to a bathroom as well as to any other room in your home. For example you might want to consider replacing a large vanity with a more stylish p pedestal sink.

You should cut back on anything that sticks out too much in the bathroom. See if you have any wall shelves, hanging racks, or decorative accessories on the walls that make your bathroom look smaller. Doing this should help make the bathroom feel larger.

You can create the illusion of height in your bathroom through the use of more vertical lines. For instance having bathroom tiles that go all the way to the ceiling or vertical stripes in a wallpaper pattern can also help make a small bathroom seem larger. Lining the edge of your ceiling with a border or a cornice, or even a painted tile around the top of the walls can help to create more visual depth. You can also find that by installing polished tiles and putting up mirrors can result in the area reflecting itself and helping to create the feel of additional square footage for your bathroom.

Letting your walls remain a neutral color like white or grey helps to create an impression of more space. Plus, if you draw the eye upwards, the room will look taller; so add a border around the ceiling to create more vertical depth. Also, installing polished tiles and hanging mirrors lets the area reflect itself, thereby creating the feel of additional square footage.

Lightning is a necessary component in creating an illusion of more space. One way to do this is to combine the mirrors with the lighting fixtures and the color. It is important to make sure that the lighting is spaced out correctly. You should have a strip of light bulbs installed above your main mirror.

Yet another good idea for those with small bathrooms is to replace the bathtub with an upscale shower design. This could be a glass cubicle with mirrors inside or an angled shower enclosure, what is usually called a quadrant corner shower unit.

Avoid a Costly Bathroom Remodel

You just can't stand it anymore. Every time you go into the bathroom you are put off by the look and feel of it. You want to make a change but the cost is so prohibitive that you simply resign yourself to the 1970's yellow and gold. Well, you will be happy to learn that making a change to your bathroom does not have to be expensive! There are simple changes you can make that will enliven one of the most popular rooms in the house and they only require basic do-yourself skills.

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

The most obvious thing to change is the color of the bathroom. If your bathroom is painted, it is relatively straightforward to repaint. Since many bathrooms are small, a gallon or two of paint should do the trick. Good quality paint can be purchased for approximately per gallon. Add in drop clothes, rollers and brushes and you are spending around 0. Not bad for such a radical change in appearance!

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

If your bathroom is wallpapered, things are bit more complicated. Removing wallpaper is not the most enjoyable job but it is easy to do. There are spray and gel products on the market that make removing wallpaper relatively painless if not a bit messy (Dif is a brand name that comes to mind). The first step is to peel of as much of the wall paper as possible to reveal the glue underneath. Follow the directions and apply the remover and allow it to sit for several minutes before scraping off the glue. Fortunately, bathrooms tend to be humid making the wallpaper easier to remove as a result. Once removed you can paint or apply new wallpaper.

For a quick upgrade in appearance, consider replacing the hardware in the bathroom. It is amazing how much better the room will look it your replace the cabinet knobs, towel racks, and faucets. These fixtures degrade in appearance over time and it happens so gradually that you might not realize how tired they look. Putting in new hardware can really make a bathroom "pop" again and the cost is relatively small. Also, consider replacing the shower curtain, shower curtain rod & rings and the door knob.

If you feel like taking on a slightly more involved upgrade, you might want to replace the toilet. A different style toilet in a new color to match your new paint can really add some pizazz. Replacing a toilet requires minimal handyman skills even if it might seem intimidating at first thought. The initial step is to turn off the toilet water supply by turning the knob near the floor and then flushing to remove the water in the tank and bowl. Disconnect the water supply hose from the toilet. Remove the nuts on the two bolts on either side of the toilet base. Next, rock the toilet gently to break the seal with the wax ring and lift it up off the floor. Remove the used wax ring and replace with a new one. Reverse the removal steps to install the new toilet. That's it - very simple and you will save yourself several hundred dollars by not needing to call plumber.

Another way to inexpensively improve your bathrooms appearance is to reface the cabinets. You can purchase adhesive covering which you cut to the size of your cabinetry and apply to the front of the cabinets and doors. The preparation requires light cleaning and sanding. Refacing can be a bit time consuming as you have to measure each cabinet surface precisely and cut the material to fit. The advantage is that it is substantially cheaper then purchasing new cabinets.

In a similar vein, if you have vinyl floors in your bathroom, you can inexpensively purchase self-adhesive tiles to update your floor. The tile in the middle of the floor are very easy to install. Simply clean the floor and then remove the backer and stick in place. Just be sure they are "square" with the walls. It is only slightly more complicated near walls and cabinets since you have to cut the tile to fit. Incidentally, if you are going to use these tiles and replace your toilet, install the tile after you have removed the old toilet but before installing the new one. Cabinet refacing materials and adhesive tiles can be purchased at home improvement stores or online retailers.

Hopefully, one or all of these ideas will inspire and help improve the look of your bathroom. The advantages are that each project is relatively inexpensive, requires only basic handyman skills and can be done over a period of time. However, the down sides are that you will have to devote the time and energy to the project. If you are not certain you will have time to complete a project or want a more involved remodel it is best to call the pros. There is nothing worse than living with a partially completed home improvement job or realizing halfway into the project that you don't have the skills to finish it.

So, take stock of your situation and jump right in. You really don't want to look at that gold trim wallpaper for even one more day!

Bathroom Remodeling in NYC

Beginning a bathroom remodeling project in New York is an exciting process. If your bathroom is the size of most bathroom's in New York City, you will be needing to either rearrange a few things or begin to completely restructure your small space to make the most of what you have!

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

In New York City we have a lot of apartments that are on the small side and inside those apartments there are usually only a few rooms, one being the bathroom. That room down the hall, off to the side, sometimes attached to the laundry - that multi-functional room that always seems so insignificant until someone comes to stay, or moves in.

Bathroom Towel Cabinet

I embarked on a small bathroom remodeling project 2 years ago. It was a space of no more than 5 x 5 square meters- some would even suggest less. I thought initially that I could keep the 70s tiling on the walls - it wasn't that bad, maybe I could paint over them, cover them up with plasterboard, anything but try to get them off the wall! And maybe I could keep the floor tiles too and I was definitely determined to keep the toilet. The final result was a complete overhaul. I jack hammered tiles off the walls and the floor and ended up with a concrete box - the feeling was fantastic, a blank canvas!

It is easy to get side tracked with small projects by turning them in to really big projects accidentally. One of the best tips of small bathroom remodeling is to maximize the amount of light entering the room, this will always create a sense of having more space. So, do you start knocking walls out or do you just creatively rearrange your space?

The first most dramatic and probably the most inexpensive change will be your choice of color you apply to the walls, floors and ceiling. The general consensus is to go for light and bright colors; this will create a feeling of brightness and airiness to a sometimes damp and dark space.

Lighting is the obvious next contributor to the image of your space. The most energy efficient way of creating a bright and lighter space is to install a sky light; of course if you live on the 2nd floor of a 56 story building this will not be an option for you. Installation of bright energy efficient lighting will, in some cases, be paramount to optimizing functionality of the room.

If your budget is as tiny as your bathroom then small and inexpensive changes can sometimes be the best option. Usually just one or two towel racks will be sufficient; use hooks on the back of your door or, place a bathroom cabinet or open shelving above the toilet. Small spaces also sometimes need a tone of organization, ensure that there are not too many hair care or dental hygiene products on your cabinet, or towels lying on the floor and maybe re think that big fluffy night gown hanging on the back of the door.

Some of the more expensive alternatives you will encounter when undergoing a small bathroom remodeling project will be also the most noticeable. Small spaces suddenly become large spaces when you consider removing a bath tub, hanging a large mirror or installing sinks and toilets on to the walls.

Bathroom projects are so much fun, but can be financially very dangerous! After you have set your budget, it is important to really commit to it! There is so much potential in the remodeling world to spend your total planned budget in a matter of hours, however it is possible to stay within budget and achieve the desired outcomes.
